The increased health risks that have been linked to smoking have been stressed and analyzed for years. All smokers know it is in their best interest on many levels to quit smoking. Many people have tried the varied products on the market, such as pills, chewing gums, self-help tapes, books, et cetera. These products are designed to help build up the personal power to resist or overcome the addiction. However, for most people, the absolute worst way to attempt to deal with a smoking habit is through the use of willpower. Like moods and emotions, willpower fluctuates. One day it is strong. The next day may be a down day and willpower fades. It is usually neither consistent nor effective.
Hypnotherapy, deep relaxation, and sleep therapy, on the other hand, build up the personal power to resist or overcome the addiction. These therapies are not designed to help you achieve the strength to resist. Instead, they are designed to eliminate the desire. Rather than giving up on or sacrificing something that you enjoy, your mind set should be to rid yourself of something that isn't wanted and this is a much more agreeable position psychologically.
There are two principle reasons for smoking: identification and replacement.
- Identification. This is where a smoker indulges in the habit because others whom he or she admires , such as a parent, peer, entertainment or sports figure, et cetera. Identification smoking is the most common and easiest to eliminate.
- Replacement. This is when smoking is used to replace some deficit in life, such as a lack of companionship, love, acceptance, self-esteem, security, independence, et cetera or to replace some pre-existing habit such as overeating, reaction to anxiety or boredom, and so forth. Replacement smokers often derive sensual gratification from smoking. For example, they enjoy touching or feeling the cigarettes, tapping the pack, seeing the flame of a lighter, the curling of rising smoke, and/or the smell of the burning tobacco. Often the lighting of the cigarette (or cigar or pipe) in itself becomes a ritual. Replacement smoking is quite often the true and severe addiction.
